VARDAR        

            

Vardar is the biggest river in Macedonia. Its springs out for Mountain Sar near the village Vrutok. The spring of Vardar is a strong single spring located on 683m above sea level. From the spring to the Macedonian – Greece border Vardar is 301km long, and to the Aegean Sea another 388km.

Vardar flows through the Polog Valley. In the upper part of Polog there are smaller tributaries: River Nozdraca, River Novoselska and River Paliska. The river Pena flows in at the village Sarakino. Close to River Beloviska, River Vardar leaves Polog and enters into the gorge Derven 21.5km long. It leaves the Derven Valley at the spring Rasce and enters the Skopje Valley together with two bigger tributaries, Lepenec and Treska.

It leaves the Skopje Valley at the village Taor and enters the 31kn-long gorge Taor, together with River Pcinja and River Kadina. The river leaves gorge Taor at the village Basino and enters Veles Valley and the 60km-long gorge Veles. After that it enters the Tikves Valley together with the biggest tributaries River Crna and Bregalnica. Soon after that it enters the 19km-long gorge Demir Kapija, the most narrowest spot deep 8km. South from Gevgelija, Vardar flows on 44m above sea level where it enters Greece. The flow of Vardar has a valley composition beacase it flows through five valleys and four gorges. The influence of the mediteranian climate can be felt. As a result it is possible to grow sub-tropical crops.

The valley of River Vardar is very important for the traffic because the roads and railway pass through it and they are the closest connection between Middle Europe and the countries of the Middle East.
