Mavrovo Lake is on the north west part of the Republic of Macedonia on 1200m above sea level among the wood and high mountains. On south is enclosed with woods and grass ???Vlainica, and on north with the Sar Planina. On the place where the lake is now at 1947 was the valley Mavrovo where the river mavrovo flew. Then at the exit of the valley was closed the way of Radika with a big ground dam. The valley started to get filled with water and on its place became Mavrovo Lake. The new lake flooded 1370 hectares mostly meadow and accumulates about 357 milions m3 water. Mavrovo Lake is 10m long and 5km to 3km wide.

The most deepest place of 50m is near the dam which is 54m height, 210m long and 5m wide. In the base the dam is wide 286m and in it are build 705.000m3 material.

Today the lake beside the small tributaries of water is fiiled by river Radika. The water of the canals are used for production of energy and irrigating. During winter the lake freezes. Mavrovo Lake is poribeno  with trout and with other fishes and the surrounding is rich with game. Above the lake on all sides are high deciduous and evergreen woods, which are cultivated at the clear water of the lake. That gives a special beauty and appearance.

High above the woods extend the endless mountain pastures rich with grass and rear wood flowers that can not be found nowhere else in the world. Because of these characteristics the surrounding of Mavrovo Lake is announced for a National Park.
