Only 15 years ago, there were no roads that took you to Mariovo and Mariovo was one the most isolated region in the country.Mariovo is region of mountains and it is located at the southern part of the country, surrounded by mountains. On the north side are the mountains Cave, Dren and Mountain Suva; on the south are the mountains Nidze and Kozuv; on the east are Turski Rid, Cateno, Golema Rudina and Orle; and on the west the Mountain Selecka. Within these borders Mariovo covers an area of 1038 km2; 28 inhabited localities where 4000 inhabitants live.Mariovo has a poor geographical position and poor road conection, because it is distant from the most important regional roads of the Republic of Macedonia. The surrounding high mountains isolate it from the other regions (Pelagonia, Tikves and Raec). Today Mariovo is partly connected by an asphalt roads where the traffic is retarded because of the curves on the road. There are two general climate types: moderate-continental and mountainous climate. The average rainfall per year is 680mm.
The River Crna, 50 km long, flows through Mariovo. Crna develops the longest, most atractive and most impressive gorge in the country – Skocivir Gorge long 100 km. The capacity of the river in the gorge is estimated to be 700 ml kw/h. However, it is not utilized although there are very favourable locations for building a dam.The population of Mariovo is well known by their folk custumes. Apart from that, the people from Mariovo are known for their patriotism and revolutionary spirit, their joyful spirit and common sense and logical judgement. In 1564 in Mariovo the first rebellion against the Turk feudal lords started. The region is suitable for cattle-breeding because of the rich natural pastures and meadows. The forests are also a big natural resource. Ore such as iron, nickel and antimony, and nonferrous metals like lignite, quartz, and perlite are plentiful in Mariovo.
