The Impact of Chemical Substances on the Quality of Land and Soil

nivi4.jpg (24577 bytes)Macedonia has done little research on the impact of fertilizers on the quality of soil and water. However, we believe that only small quantities of chemical substances are used in vegetable growing and that we comply with the directives. Burning of straw is a widely spread practice but it decreases the organic ingredients in the soil. Thus, about 11,000 ha are classified as saline soil. There is a need for a programme for desalinization the soil and reviving it to production.

Impact of Industrial and Household Waste on Quality of Soil

The annual industrial production in avaerage was about 1.2 million tons in the period from 1990 to 1995. The inadequate way of waste desposals and non-enforcement of norms on the part of the management from the industrial plants is the main problem that threatens the whole environment. Only in the region of Veles enormous levels of lead and zinc in the nearby soil have been registered. As a result, the crop is contaminated. The illegal dumps and household waste desposals have interfered with the environmental balance.

Heavy metals penetrate the soil as solid substances deposited, most often, by air. Lead is one of the most frequent pollutants in nature. The presence of lead in agricultural land is increasing continuously. The biggest source of lead are the vechicles that pollute the environment, while the rains help the lead enter the soil and vegetables.

Another heavy metal that is becoming present is Mercury. One of the alternative methods for vegetable growing is inert substratum.
