(The measures were taken during 1975 and 1976)
Water supply in the Republic of Macedonia consists of natural sources of water, underground water, accumulations and water flows. The natural sources of water are the most prominent and they comprise 63% of the total quantity of water. Sources of water are the karst waters, ground waters and underground waters. Underground waters are used in the towns: Delcevo, Kocani and Stip regularly, and in Skopje, Veles and Gevgelija seasonal, according to the needs. The sources of drinking water have not been polluted yet. There are two regional water supply systems: Studencica and Lukar. Still, for certain towns the water resources do not meet the needs. The worst off towns are: Gostivar, Resen, Veles, Kumanovo, Stip, Strumica, Valandovo, Kriva Palanka and Dojran. The average consumption of water of the population per inhabitant is from 0.25 m3 up to 0.35 m3. The water supply system has problems that arise from the fact that part of the system is out-dated with different kinds of pipes that cause difficulties in the supply and cause losses from 18% to 46%.
