| Another town known
for its pollution is Veles. The main air pollutant in Veles is the lead and zinc smelter.
There are two monitoring stations that have registered significantly high levels SO2
within the smelter, that is located within the town itself. In the period from 1990 to
1993 the concetration of SO2 in the city exceeded the maximum limits 38, 39 and
32 times per annum. The following year the limit was exceeded only twice. Although smoke
is not one of the main problems in the city, still high concetrations of lead, zinc and
cadmium were registered. The presence of such heavy metals is a threat to human beings and
their environment.
