Air Quality in Skopje

148.gif (1052 bytes)

wpeE3.jpg (5444 bytes)The main problem with air pollution in Skopje is due to the inappropriate location of the industrial plants (too close to residential areas). The city itself is surrounded by mountains that create conditions for increasing the concetrations of harmful gases in the air. There are seven monitoring stations in the city. These stations have registered the following results:

In the last 8 years the maximum daily concetration of sulphur dioxide (SO2) exceed the limit of 150 mg /m 3 up to 35 times per annum. Unlike the other monitoring stations that register normal concetrations of SO2 , the three monitoring stations in the centre of the city indicate significantly higher average value (92.68 and 75 mg/m3)

On the other hand, the maximum daily concetration of smoke exceed the limits from 50 mg/m3 to 123 times per annum.
