soborna.jpg (27210 bytes)152 air pollutants exist on the territory of Skopje. About 150 tons hazardous substance are discharged in the air daily. These substances contain carbon oxides, sulphur dioxides, nitrogen oxides etc. Such is the case because most of the 10-20 year old industrial facilities are located in the city and they work with out-dated technologies. About 11.4 tons of Carbon Monoxide, 11.3 tons of Sulphur Dioxide, about 5 tons of Nitrogen Oxides, 2 tons of dust etc. are discharged every day. The aero-toxins from the traffic and households only make the situation worse. About 120 tons of petrol per day is used up in Skopje. From that quantity 99.7 tons of different hazardous substances are discharged. The combustion of 230 tons of oil per day emits 22.8 tons of various pollutants. Thus, a total of 122.5 tons of aero-toxins are emitted every day. This data was processed by the Mining Institute and it will be used to draft an environmental rehabilitation map.

The park and forest "Vodno" is the real liver of Skopje. Vodno was not forestrated before and because of that it was exposed to erosion. However, today we have to protect the forest from human negligence and various parazites. Many trees have parazites around their trunks, branches and leaves that suffocate the trees and block the sun rays. This parazite needs to be cut with scissors in order to terminate its harmful effects at least for the next few years.

In addition, the pines on Vodno suffer from two types of parazites. One of the parazites takes over the young branches and most of the time it even destroys the top of the trees. Thus, one can notice that the young branches are withering in April and May. Once the branches are cut down, the worm is exposed and much easier to destroy. There is another kind of parazite that spreads in groups and takes over whole branches and eventually the whole tree causing it to dry out. This parazite is also easy to detect and destroy.

Mankind is the third harmful "parazite" on Vodno. When you go for a walk you will notice dumping sites full of plastic and glass bottles. In the Summer, when the temperature is high, the dry grass and leaves can easily go into flames causing fires with grave consequences.

Skopje and the Pipeline

wpe149.jpg (20069 bytes)One of the most significant environmental projects in the Republic of Macedonia is "GAMA 800" that will save the whole environment from high concentrations of aero-pollutants in the cities like Skopje. Once crude oil is not used for heating purposes in the households and for the industrial needs, the emissions of harmful substances i.e. thounsands of tons of Sulphur Dioxide will cease. According to the experts, this shift in energy supply will decrease pollution up to 130 times in Skopje. There is also an economic justification for the gas pipeline since it will save up to 100 million kwh electrical power.
