Mountain Lakes

3AR52.GIF (790 bytes)

mavr.ezer.jpg (6712 bytes)All lakes whose water level is over 1000 metres belong to the group of mountain lakes. According to height there are lower lakes, like Lake Lokuv on Mountain Desat, 1,565 metres high, and higher lakes, the highest being the lake Golem Korab on Mountain Korab, 2470 metres high. Most of the lakes are concentrated on the level between 1750 and 2200 metres.

Lakes are divided into:

    • Natural lakes
    • Artificial lakes

Natural lakes are the following:

Glacier Erosive Mountain Lakes

They were formed from the extremely carved parts of the cirques, the points of the mountain icicles from long ago. These lakes are also called "Mountain Eyes". Such lakes exist on Sar Mountain, Korab, Desat, Jablanica, Stogovo, Jakupica etc.

Karst Erosive Mountain Lakes:

Periodical:

They were formed in the karst mountain areas. They have water in their basins only in the wet seasons. Such lakes can be found in the karst areas on Mount Bistra and on other mountains.

Cave:

They are most prominent in the cave siphons. These lakes are small in terms of area. They can be found in the cave Alilica on Mount Bistra, on Mount Krcin and on other places.

Eon Erosive Mountain Lakes:

They were formed in the gaps created by the strong mountain winds. These lakes are small and they only have water after pouring rainfalls or during the melting of the snow. Such lakes can be found on the high parts of the mountains Sar, Korab, Bistra etc.

Accumulation Mountain Lakes:

Moraine:

They can be found in the gaps of the glacier deposited substances. Such lakes are present on the mountains Sar, Korab, Desat, Stogovo etc.

Wave:

They can be found in the thermal basins behind the leading moraines separating the waves of the disappeared icicles. Such lakes can be found on the mountains Sar (Lake Bogovina), Korab (the two lakes in district Kobilino Pole) and on Desat (Northern and Southern Lake Trebisko).

Combination - cirque - moraine:

They can be found on mountain areas, on parts that were once mountain glaciers. Such lakes are Golemo Pelister Lake etc.

Artificial Mountain Lakes:

Mankind created these lakes by separating the river valleys. They were built to meet a certain need of human beings. In the karst areas of specific mountains small lakes were created. The waters of these lakes were used by the cattle-breeders as drinking water for the cattle. Such lakes can be found on the mountains Bistra (Toni Voda, Sultanica) etc.

Protection and Pollution:

Image11.jpg (21162 bytes)The greatest pollutants of mountain lakes are the temporal cattle-breeding settlements that have been built next to mountain lakes or near the lake flows. The disappearance of the mountain lakes is much due to human negligence. Thus, humans dig flows or widen and deepen them to obtain a bigger quantity of water for their needs. Such an example is Lake Podgorica on Mountain Jablanica that has been destroyed by the inhabitants of the village Labuniste in the municipality Struga. Part of them has died naturally when their basin dried out, or from the deposition of organic and inorganic substances. Mountain lakes in the phase of extinction and disappearance are Lake Bogovina on Mountain Sar, Lake Lokuv on Mountain Desat, Dolno and Gornoto Labuniste Lake on Mountain Jablanica etc. The lakes that have disappeared completely in the last 50 years are the two Dedelbelci Lakes that partially exist as the temporal Dolno Dobrosko lake on the Mountain Sar etc.
