| Sustainable
agriculture is utilization of nature and natural resources by mankind without disrupting
the environment. Today, contemporary agriculture implies application of intensive
agri-technological measures. However, these measures have an negative impact on the
environment. Usage of chimical substances cause disruption of biological balance and have
a negative influence on activities such as: mining, industry, urban planning etc.
Great quantities of organic fertilizers are required for the
fertility of the soil, which is a limiting factor for the devolopment of sustainable
agriculture. The needs for such fertilizers is enormous. They can be obtained from
cattle-breeding farms (about 4,170.000 tons of organic ferlitizers are produced annually
in the Republic of Macedonia) that meet about 36% of the needs. The rest can be obtained
by processing secondary raw material (hay, food leftovers, manure, waste from sewage
systems etc.). Organic susbstances can be used only if they are treated microbiologically
i.e. by composting.

| Measures for introducing sustainable
agriculture in Macedonia are the following:
- Complete utilization of arable land (only 30% of the total quantity of arable land is
utilized).
- Utilization of the whole quantity of organic fertilizers.
- Reduced use of mineral fertilizers.
- Land protection from erosion by forestration of barren hills.
- Prohibition of development (industrial, commercial etc.) in zones designated for
sustainable agriculture.
- Incentives for farmers to produce health foods (expert assistance, guaranteed ransom,
various subsudies etc.).
- Measures promoting development of honey production in regions with good conditions.
- Encouraging development of fisheries where there are conditions for that.
- Complete control of soil and water as a condition for production of health foods.
- .Sustainable forestry.
Rational water management (appropriate utilization of rivers, introducing the system
"drop by drop", protection of springs, development of water treatment facilities
etc.). |
