mavrezer2.jpg (10510 bytes)The National Park Mavrovo was established in 1949 because of the exceptional natural beauties, historic and scientific importance of the forests and forest areas surrounding Mavrovo Pole, by the Law of the National Assembly of the People's Republic of Macedonia at the time. From the total area of the national park (73.088 hectares), forestrated are 27.187 hectares. Amongst the many species of trees in the national park "Mavrovo" is the chestnut that grows in the area of the villages Skudrinje and Prisojnica. The presence of the patogenic mushroom in Macedonia from the 70-ies endangers the survival of the chestnut. Thus, measures should be undertaken to preserve the chestnut in these chestnut forests.

The mountain Desat is within the national park Mavrovo that has 5 permenant glacier lakes. These lakes are relatively small, but significant. Thus, the lake Lokuv is located on the absolutely lowest level above sea of 1560 metres and it is the lowest glacier errosive lake in the Republic of Macedonia. Apart from this lake there are: Sveta Nedela Lake, North and South Gasovo Lakes and Turen Kamen Lake.

Natural rarieties have been designated into 5 strictly protected zones with a total area of about 4.796 ha or 11 scietific research forestrated sections of 6.465 ha. The rest is meliorative part of the national park that is divided into 6 spatial units and one tourist and recreational zone.

Mavrovo has 50 vegetation registred communities and 100 rare species.

mavr.ezero.jpg (27216 bytes)The wild life in Mavrovo is present with 64 species or 62.1 % from the total quantity of wild life in the Republic of Macedonia. 41 species or 51.9% are permenantly protected, while 14 species or 82.4 % is wild life without legal protection in Macedonia.

It encompasses the southern parts of Mountain Sara, the western and central parts of Bistra, as well as parts of Korab and Desat. The highest point of the park area is Great Korab (2764 metres), while the lowest point is in the district called Boskov Most, where the river Mala Reka flows into the river Radika (600 metres). The medium part of the national park consists of the valley and river Radika, that also has many interesting geomorphological forms (gorges, cannons, steep slopes, caves etc.). From a point of view of the vegetation we can say: in the lower parts in the vicinity of the rivers Radika and Mala Reka there are sub-mediteranian thermo - xerophilic forests, while the cannon has black forests and bushes. The highlands have sub-alp oak forests. The fauna is quite diverse. Over 150 species of birds and 45 species of mamles can be found. We can find the eagle Cruiser, grey eagle, forest owl, meadow owl, bear, wild goat, wild cat etc.
