Image5.jpg (32278 bytes)There are about 25 landfills (see table) in the Republic of Macedonia. The only modern landfill is Drisla in Skopje that can perform properly. The rest of the landfills are below the level of environmental standards and as such they are a threat to the environment. Most of them are built on karst soil, thus the threat to pollute the underground waters by means of migration of dissolvent ingredients.

Municipal solid waste contains: 25% ashes and constructional waste, 24% paper, 20% wooden waste, 11% plastic, 4% glass and porcelain, 4% textile and leather, 3% metals and 8% other types of waste.

In the smaller settlements and villages the waste is dumped unorganized in various places, including the national parks Mavrovo and Galicica. Often the waste ends up near the lakes, rivers and springs polluting their waters. The most potentially dangerous landfills are Vardariste in Skopje as well as the landfills in Berovo, Pehcevo, Tetovo, Gostivar, Ohrid, Mavrovo, Struga etc.
