A great quantity of
industrial hazardous waste is created in metalurgy, mining, fertilizer industry, chemical
industry as well as in the power plants. At the moment, the deposition of the dross in the
lead and zinc smelter in Veles and in "Jugohrom" in Jegunovce near Tetovo, is a
potential threat to the nearby underground waters. The waste needs to be managed properly
in the ferro-nickel plant Fenimak that creates about 430,000 tons of dross per annum. The
same is true for the power plant in Bitola, that has taken up an area of 1000 ha for
depositing ashes. We can still remember the incidents of polluting the waters of the
rivers Zletovska Reka, Bregalnica and Vardar in the past.
