Bitola

bitola2.jpg (24616 bytes)The main reason for air pollution in Bitola is the power plant and the nearby mine. The concetration of SO2 is within the permitted limits, however the presence of smoke in the town exceed the limits from 10 to 25 times in the period from 1990 to 1994 godina.

Tetovo and Polog Ravine

wpeE8.jpg (8460 bytes)Very similar to Bitola. The concetration of smoke in this region exceeds the limits from 16 to 78 times in one year. The presence of HEK "Jugohrom" and the exploitation of fuels that contain big quantities of sulphur during the winter contribute to the pollution of Tetovo.

About 257.865.600m3 SO2 annually is discharged from the energy installations in the Polog ravine. About 2/3 of this quantity is discharged during the heating season and is due to the great consumption of substances for heating of which 49% is coal and 34% wood. About 10% is crude oil and the enterprises "Jugohrom" and "Teteks" contribute to about 56% from the overall emission.

Other towns with air pollution problems are: Kicevo, Kumanovo, Ohrid and Prilep.
