It was declared National Park in 1958 bt the Assembly of SR Macedonia.It has an area of 23,000 ha and is located on the mountain Galicica between the two lakes: Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. The powest point is 693 metres above the level of Lake Ohrid, while the highest point is 2275 metres on the tip of Galicica. The western slopes are in direct reach of Lake Ohrid while the eastern slopes of Lake Prespa. The central part of Galicica is a broad plateau with many high points. On both sides of the slopes there are magnificent sights of the lakes and the nearby mountains. Galicica is known for its exceptional abandunt and beautiful nature. Various wild creatures live there amongst which are: the bear, wild goat, wild boar, deer, various species of birds and other animals. Apart from the natural beauties this park has many significant monuments of culture. A large number of churches and monasteries are located on the slopes of the national park such as the monasteries St. Naum, St. Bogorodica Pestanska and Sv. Stefan, and churches St. Ilia in Elesani and St. Bogorodica in Velestovo as well as the basilica St. Gorgia.

| 31 vegetation communities are registered in Galicica, 19 of which are forests and the rest grass. From all the national parks Galicica has most of the wild life. It has 100 species or 97.1% of the total wild life in Macedonia. 61 species or 77.2% are permenently protected, while 16 species or 94.1% is wild life with no legal protection in Macedonia.
