| The Republic of
Macedonia has about 53 natural and artificial lakes. The biggest lake is Lake Ohrid with
area of 348m2 (118.9m2 belongs to Albania), and depth of 294m.
Second large is Prespa Lake with area of 275km2 (49.4km2 belongs to
Albania and 47.8km2 belongs to Greece) with maximum depth of 54m. The level of
the water in this lake decreases and causes problems for the environment. The third
tectonic lake in the Republic of Macedonia is Dojran Lake with area of 43km2
(the lesser part belonging to Greece). The level of the water in this lake is decreasing
rapidly due to the doughts in recent years as well as due to the enormous consumption of
water in agriculture. Apart from these tectonic lakes, there are also quite a number of
glacier lakes that are smaller and located in the mountains. Such lakes can be found on
the mountains: Sar, Pelister, Jakupica and Jablanica. Most famous are: Livadicko Lake,
Bogovinsko and Karanikolicko on Sar Mountain and the Big and Small Lake on Pelister.

Treska, Mavrovo Lake, Debar Lake, Tikves Lake on River Crna Reka, Mladost, Kalimanci on
River Bregalnica, Lipkovo, Gradce, Mantovo, Suvodol etc. Tikves Lake is the biggest with
an area of 14km2. The artificial accumulations are necessary water systems for
providing quality water. Apart from that they are used for: power generation, industrial
water, sports and recreation, meliorative ventures, fisheries etc.
