National Parks in Macedonia

Today the national parks are facing the following problems although there is a Law Protection of National Parks:

Degraded Natural Reserves

tree3.gif (1628 bytes)The national parks in Macedonia are proclaimed with special regulations, thus they have a legally established regime for protection. The total protected area of these parks is 205.235 ha or 8.07 % of the total area of the country. It is well-known that the national parks are the national treasure of every country, however that seems to be forgotten in these parts. Thus, the three national parks in Macedonia: Mavrovo, Pelister and Galicica are neglicted by the State, and as a result they are wasted and degraded. The one thing in common for all three parks is the lack of resources needed to provide the necessary protection. The parks have to provide the funds of their own mainly generated from selling licenses for cutting trees. In that respect, Galicica is worst off with limited quantities of cutting trees. As a result, very valuable parts of nature are endangered. Some of the problems faced by the parks are:

  • National Park Mavrovo

The biggest problem is the dumps and illegal tree cutting, especially the enormous dumping site that has spread all the way to the damp near Mavrovo Lake. Several catering facilities and storage places for detergents operate illegally along the river Radika (the so-called last clean river in Macedonia), as well as illegal warehouses for constructional material. A negative event is the exploitation od sand, limestome, clay and other substances all over the park, especially from the basin of the river Radika.

  • National Park Galicica

The illegal dumping sites are a big problem for this park also. There is a total of 18 dumps, two of which are close to Ohrid Lake. Another problem is the illegal construction of buildings, especially near the village Trpejca. The biggest problem is the constructed road from the village Ljubaniste to the Albanian border that threatens the sources of the river Crn Drim. This park too has two illegal sites for exploatation of constructional material near the place called Zli Dol.

The hunting site in the national park hinders the natural development of wild life. "Makpetrol" has built a power pipeline without an approval of the National Park. Also a skiing resort has been built in the place Suvo Pole without an approval.

  • National park Pelister

Illegal tree cutting and destroying of nature by hikers is a problem in this park as well. It seems that things are well managed here, however they are not excellent.

The only thing that is better is that in the national park Pelister there are no illegal activities destroying the determined protection regime.

Glacier mountain lakes

There are 8 constant glacier lakes on the mountain Korab, 5 on Des, 4 on Jablanica, 3 on Stogovo, 2 on Jakupica, whereas on Sar Planina there are 10 to 12 lakes.

Threat to Biodiversity

Air pollution and underground water polluation is enhenced and reprsents a big threat to the stability of the source ecco-systems. the overusage and inappropriate utilization of mushrooms, abused sport and commercial fishing and uncontrolled hunting of small and big wild aminals contributed to the fall, nearly below the biological minimum, of the population of certain species of wild fauna in the natural ecco-systems. As a result, some of the vegetation and wild life species are either rare or completely exterminated like the wild cat, the bear, the wolf etc.

Over 1500 species of vegetation live in the national parks, of which about 120 are rare. There are also over 200 species of birds, over 45 species of other animals and many species of wild fauna.

101007.gif (1541 bytes)Most prominent mamles in the parks are the families of weasels, dogs and cats, as well as deer. From the birds, most domimanat are the families of eagles, hawks, with over 15 species, and geese swans and ducks, with over 12 species, then ravans, storks, with 8 species each, and owls with 7 species, etc.

According to the Law on Hunting, there are 127 species of wild fauna in Macedonia such as wild life of which 24 species are mamles and the rest birds.
