The Vardar valley costumes
The Vardar valley costumes are among the most opulent Macedonian folk costumes regarding the colours and elements.
Men's costume consists of a shirt (white, with red embroidery on the collar and sleeves), white trousers made of white homemade cloth (ase), a skirt (ajta), a short sleeveless embroidered jacket, red socks decorated with a number of colours and, certainly, of "opinci" (typical peasant shoes).
Women's costumes consist of a long white shirt, a long sleeveless embroidered jacket, an apron-like upper skirt (skutnik), a scarf, red socks, and "opinci" (typical peasant shoes). All elements, particularly of the women's costume, are lavishly embroidered with red, occasional black, and other thread colours. The embroidery, especially on the "skutnik" are true masterworks.
