It is located in the village of Lesok, in the region of Tetovo. The church is dedicated to St. Atanasie. It was built by a monk Joanakie, later the first bishop of Dolen Polog, during the foundation of the first Polog eparchy - between 1348 - 1355. P. Miljkovic - Pepek wrote an entire study on the church of St. Atanasius of Alexandria, dating it within the period of 1320-1331. He locates it in the vicinity of the monastery Lesok, seemingly implying to another church. Nevertheless, Miljkovic - Pepek probably identified the monastery Lesok with the church of St. Bogorodica (Holy Mother), which Kiril Pejcinovic renovated and converted into monastery in the early XIX century. In the historic literature in general, the Lesok monastery is referred to as the church of St. Atanasie, and here it is accepted as such. The editors of the popular publication of "Monuments of Culture in Macedonia" present both churches, where A. Nikolovski clearly indicates that the church of St. Bogorodica (Holy Mother) became an appendice of the monastery of St. Atanasie in Lesok. Before the XVII century the monastery was restored by the bishop of Polog, Nikanor. Around 1698 the monastery was seriously damaged in a severe storm. The waters from the mountains flooded the monastery, and the monks abandoned it. Since then, and all the way to 1927, the monastery was in ruins. In 1927 R. Gruic excavated the monastery and enabled its further survey based on the archaeological artifacts. Its frescoes date from 1340/45.
