Monastery of St. Andrew, Matka
See the ceremonial entrance door of the church's iconostasis.
It is situated by the river Treska, in the locality Matka, in the region of Skopje. Its builder was Andrea, the son of King Vukasin, and brother of King Marko. According to the inscription on the church's western wall, it was erected in 1389, by numerous monks, among whom was Kalist Kiril. He was the monastery's prior, and died after the frescoes were finished. During the same year when he built the shrine, he endowed it with the following villages: Bukurci - not existing any more, between Skopje and Tetovo; Krusica - today a locality with the same name exists near Tetovo, however there are no ruins of either houses or a graveyard; Krusopeci, now Krusopek near Skopje; Lukovica near Tetovo, now a locality with the same name exists, however without any traces of a settlement; and Povilno. The authors of the frescoes were: Jovan Zograf the metropolitan and Grigore the monk, assisted by Kalist Kiril the monk and other monks. The main painter was Jovan the metropolitan, and his painting strokes are distinctive. In 1401 Patriarch Paisij visited the monastery. In the mid-XVI century, a parvis was added to the monastery, and it was fresco painted in 1559/60. The monastery is also mentioned in a 1642 record of Menaion. During 1971/72 conservation activities were carried out, since it was rather neglected until the first post-Second World War years.
