A green cover

    Approximately one third of the Macedonian territory is covered with forests. It is quite high degree of woodland, with both deciduous and evergreen forests. The most common tree species are: beech, oak, maple, juniper bush, fir, pine, birch, European ash, chestnut, hazelnut, etc.

   Beech grows in the lower mountain areas in the Western Macedonia and in the largest part of the highland areas of the Eastern Macedonia, and the conifer trees on higher mountains. There are larger areas covered with evergreen forests on the mountains of Shara, Baba, Bistra, Korab, Bushova Planina, Jakupica, Nidze, Kozuf, and on the mountains within the region of Maleshevo.
