Lake Prespa is a tectonic one, and it is also a junction of the three state borders: Macedonian, Greek, and Albanian. Its altitude above the sea level is 853 m, it covers an area of 274 km2, and is 54 m deep. In the middle of the Lake, on the Macedonian territory, a striking isle of Golem Grad is located, with its steep hills, its forest, and its diversified wildlife. Famous tourist resorts along the Lake shore are: Oteshevo, Pretor, Asamati, and Stenje.

Lake Dojran (148 m of altitude) is located at the foothill of Mount Belasica. It covers an area of 43 km2, and is up to 10 metres deep. It is rich in fish which is caught in a special way. Namely, there they use cormorants which, flying low in flocks carry the fish to the specially prepared and enclosed fishing reservoirs. This type of fishing originates from the Classical Era (Herodotus' time), and is common for the rivers and lakes of China.
