National park Mavrovo
![]()
The area of the
Mavrovo National Park covers the southern slopes of Mount Shara, part of the
Korab massif, and Mount Bistra. It is full of exquisite natural attractions,
mountain rivers, beautiful and flourishing valleys, canyons, and opulent
vegetation. The sky is shaded by 52 peaks above 2,000 m of altitude.
The jewel of the Park is Lake
Mavrovo (1,235 m of altitude), our highest lake (except for the glacial ones).
Within it is also the gorge of the Radika river, one of the most magnificent in
Macedonia.
Within the Park completely protected zones are: peat bogs in several localities, Strezimir with its black pine, the Bogdevska river with its Meninanthes trifoliata and sedge, Mount Senechka, Mahijamada Hill with its molika and munika trees, the Dlaboka river, and several other localities. Exceptionally colourful are the villages around Lake Mavrovo, as well as the ones in the region of Mijach: Galichnik, Lazaropole, Tresonche, Gari, Rosoki, Selce, Osoj, etc., with their interesting highland architecture and numerous churches and monasteries. Of extreme importance for both ecclesiastic and spiritual life in Macedonia is the Monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski located near the village of Bitushe.
