Steep kanyon of Matka

    On its way to the Vardar river, the Treska river forms 85 km long gorge with the magnificent rocky relief that occasionally gets the shape of a canyon. On this river a hydroelectric powerstation and a dam were built, and the artificial lake of Matka was formed. In the canyon above the Lake there are rocks that raise almost vertically, enabling excellent conditions for mountaineering and alpinism. There are also numerous caves. Chamois is quite common, and the sky is sailed by eagles an other bird species that are quite rarely seen on other spots. Also many churches and monasteries adorn the landscape. The Matka canyon is located in the immediate vicinity of Skopje, thus allowing for quite frequent walks in the beautiful environment.
