| Condition: Very well preserved. The edges of the icon are worm-eaten but the paint is untouched. Iconography: The icon is divided into three fields. In the central, the largest field, the composition "Dormition" is painted. In the centre, on a catafalque, the body of the Mother of God. On both sides and behind the catafalque, the apostles and two archpriests, one of whom is holding a thick book. Behind the group of apostles, in a spiked mandorla, Jesus Christ is shown with a personification of the soul of the Mother of God is in His right hand. An angel on each side of the mandorla. Requisite architecture in the background. In the second field, St. John of Damascus shown in full length. In his left hand, an open scroll inscribed with text in Greek. In the third field, St. Cosmas Melodus of Maiuna, a friend of John of Damascus from childhood. As a monk, he helped John of Damascus compose the Oktoechos, and write many canons. Shown in full length, he gives a blessing with his right hand and in his left holds an open scroll inscribed with text in Greek. He is dressed as a monk, with a hood.
