1584

187 x 197 cm.

Tempera. Plaster ground on board. Cross carved in wood. From the church of the Monastery of St. George of Polog, on the River Crna - Kavadarci.

Today - Museum of Macedonia, Skopje.

Condition: The cross as a whole is very well preserved. Damage caused by flaking of plaster ground visible in places. The carved wooden frames of the icons of the Mother of God and St. John have been cut into at unknown date to mount them on a new iconostasis.

Iconography: The crucified Christ, with head gently leaning on the right shoulder, is shown on a large cross. He has a loincloth round his hips. At the four extremities of the cross, which are trefoil-shaped, are representations of the four evangelists. On the separate icons, the Mother of God in full length, turned towards the crucified Christ, pointing towards Him with her right hand, and St. John, also turned towards Christ, with his hand raised to his face in a gesture of sorrow.

The icons are supported by long palm leaves, two on each side. Below, the grave of Adam marked with a skull.

Conservation: Conserved and cleaned in the laboratory of IPCM - Skopje.
