St. George with Hagiography |
134 x 74 cm. From the church of St. George, Struga. In the same church today. Condition: Well preserved. In the lower part of the icon there is damage caused by flaking of the plaster ground and layer of paint. Minor and major damage on the halo. Iconography: The icon consists of 18 fields, of which the central one is the largest while the others are disposed on the broad frame. St. George is shown in full length in a frontal pose. In his right hand he holds a golden cross and in his left a long lance decorated with red band and a large sword, with gold applique and red band on the sheath. Dressed in dark-red hiton decorated with gold ornaments. On top of it, vermilion mantle decorated with wide gold bands and flowers made out of pearls. On his head, over the dark hair, he wears a red wreath decorated with gold and pearls. The halo made of plastic, using plaster ornamentation. |
| On the frame, around the central field, 17 scenes from the hagiography of St, George. In the upper row are presented the compositions: "St. George before Diocletian"; "The Torturing of St. George, with His Feet in the Stocks"; and "The Scourging with Oxhide Whips". On the left side: "The Slaying of the Dragon"; "Resurrecting a Dead Man"; "Raising Glicarius’ Ox"; "The Torture on the Wheel"; and "Burning in the Fire". On the right: "The Torture with Iron Rakes"; "The Torture in the Lime-kiln"; "Tearing of the Flesh with Red-hot Pincers"; "The Sawing of the Head"; and "The Torture in the Boiling Cauldron". On the lower frame: "The Drinking of Poison"; "The Roasting on the Grid-iron"; "The Destruction of the Idol"; and "The Severing of the Head". Conservation: Conserved and cleaned in the laboratory of IPCM - Skopje.
