St. Nicholas |
85.5 x 45 cm. Tempera. Plaster ground on board. From the church of the Mother of God Peribleptos (St. Clement’s), Ohrid. Today - Icon Gallery, Ohrid. Condition: Major damage due to flaking off of the plaster ground visible in the lower part of the icon. Right side of the halo damaged. The damage goes as far as the cross on the maphorion but the face has not been damaged. |
| Iconography: St. Nicholas is in half-length. He is giving a blessing with his right hand and in his left holds a large closed book, the cover decorated with pearls and precious stones. He is dressed in priestly vestments of red with white mophorion on the chest. On the mophorion, large crosses inscribed with a cryptogram. On both sides, above the saints’ shoulders, are very small portrayals of Jesus Christ and the Mother of God, holding out a gospel and a mophorion. St. Nicholas’ halo is particularly interesting: it is painted in imitation of a metal halo. The background is red. Conservation: Conserved in the laboratory of IPCM - Skopje.
