The Presentation of the Mother of God at the Temple |
14th century 87 x 68.5 cm. Tempera. Plaster ground on board. From the church of the Mother of God Peribleptos (St. Clement’s), Ohrid. Today - Icon Gallery, Ohrid. |
| Condition: The icon is relatively well preserved. Minor damage visible in several places and greater damage to the lower part from the flaking of the plaster ground and layer of paint. A particular problem is that the layer of paint does not hold firmly to the plaster ground, and so even the smallest change in temperature or humidity results in peeling. Iconography: The young Mother of God, dressed in a green hiton and dark-red maphorion with a large white cloth which falls from the head almost to the middle of the maphorion, is shown in the centre. In front of her, with arms stretched out towards her is the priest Zechariah. Behind the Mother of God, seven older girls dressed in various garments. Jehoiakim and Anna on the right. In the background, architecture consisting of a highly raised baldaqin and a semicircular wall, on the left of which the young Mother is seated. An angel descends towards her. The background is painted in ochre, as are the haloes. Conservation: Conserved in the laboratory of IPCM - Skopje.
