The Mother of God with Christ |
91 x 53.5 cm. Tempera, Plaster ground on board. Revetment of gilded silver. From the church the Mother of God Peribleptos (St. Clement’s), Ohrid. Today - Icon Gallery, Ohrid. Condition: The face of the Mother of God is seriously damaged by flaking of the plaster ground together with the layer of paint. Minor damage visible in several places. |
| Iconography: The Mother of God is shown in half-length, with the infant Christ in her left arm. She holds His leg with her right hand. She is dressed in a red maphorion and under it a blue Greek cap can be seen. The maphorion is decorated with gold band. The infant Christ is giving a blessing with His right hand and His left carries a rolled scroll. He is dressed in a white shirt with a vermilion belt round the waist and a orange cloak with dark-red shadows. A particularly interesting fact is that the Mother of God is holding her son’s leg. On the metal revetment, made to fit this icon, there are representations of personifications of the evangelists Matthew, Mark and John. The personification of Mark is unusual, as he is shown as a two-headed eagle. Among the floral decoration on the revetment there were six figures of prophets, of which five remain. These have frequently been identified incorrectly as portraits of the Serbian Royal Family. Conservation: Conserved in the laboratory of IPCM - Skopje.
