St. Naum |
14th century 91.5 x 70.5 cm. Tempera. Plaster ground on board. From the church St. Nicholas Hospitaller, Ohrid. Today - Icon Gallery, Ohrid. Condition: In general, very well preserved. However, at some time certainly before the 17th century, it cracked vertically into two halves and was covered with dark soot and dust, so that it was used as an ordinary board for the painting, on the back, of the Archangel Michael. During the preparation of the board for this new painting, it was strengthened by two laths nailed on the side of the old icon. These nails caused considerable damage in the upper and lower parts. |
| Iconography: St. Naum is shown in half-length. He gives a blessing with his right hand and in his left he holds a scroll. He is dressed in a green hiton and a monk’s cloak of burnt ochre, with a hood down. The background is not painted, which indicates that the icon was prepared to receive a metal revetment, but this was never affixed. Conservation: Cleaned and preserved in the laboratory of IPCM - Skopje.
