St. Nicholas with Hagiography |
94 x 66.5 cm. Tempera. Plaster ground on board. From the church St. Sophia, Ohrid. Today - Museum of Macedonia, Skopje. Condition: This icon is very seriously damaged. The right side of the frame is completely destroyed. Damage also visible at the central area showing St. Nicholas. The upper part of his forehead and the halo are destroyed. The composition from the life of St. Nicholas on the upper part of the frame is damaged, with the exception of one, which is better preserved. Lower part of the frame also seriously damaged. |
| Iconography: St. Nicholas is depicted in half-length in the centre. He gives a blessing with his right hand and in his left holds an open book with a text in Greek. The saint is dressed in modest clothing, with a beautiful omophorion on his chest. On both sides of his head, half-length are portrayed Jesus Christ and the Mother of God. Christ holds a richly decorated book in His right hand and a scroll in His left. The Mother of God holds an omophorion. As far as we can tell today, on the wide frame of the icon, there were ten scenes illustrating the life of St. Nicholas. Three of them are completely preserved, three are more or less damaged and the others are completely destroyed. Among the remaining compositions we can recognize “The Birth of St. Nicholas”, “St. Nicholas Studying with a Monk”, The Ordination of St. Nicholas as an Archpriest”, “The Calming of the Storm”, “Saving Three People From Death”, “Saving a Girl from the Snake”, “Cutting the Tree from which Evil Spirits Descend”, “The Death of St. Nicholas”. Conservation: Conserved in the laboratory of IPCM - Skopje.
