The Mother of God the Soul Saviour |
158 x 121 cm. Tempera. Plaster ground on board. Revetment of gilded silver. Origin - probably from the iconostasis of the church of St. Sophia, Ohrid. Found in the church of the Mother of God Peribleptos, Ohrid. Today - Icon Gallery, Ohrid. |
| Condition: Only the face of the Mother of God and the body of the
infant Christ were not repainted in the 19th century. The hiton and himation of
the Mother of God completely repainted, probably because of damage. Apart from the metal
revetment on the background and frame, which can be considered to have been specially made
for this icon, new haloes for the Mother of God and the infant Christ and a large silver
hand added at a later date. Iconography: The Mother of God the Soul Saviour is shown in half-length, with the infant Christ in her left arm. She is pointing to Christ with her right hand. She is wearing a hiton and a maphorion, which were repainted in the 19th century. Christ gives a blessing with His right hand and holds a rolled scroll in His left. He is dressed in a sleeveless yellow shirt with a vermilion belt round His waist. His legs are shown naked to about knee-height. Among the plates of metal revetment there is one showing Archbishop Nicholas. Conservation: The icon has been partially conserved. However, the layer of paint added in the 19th century has not been removed.
