The Mother of God Episcepsis

i28mala.jpg (21486 bytes)

14th century

103.5 x 52 cm.

Tempera. Plaster ground on board.

From the church Physician Saint the Lesser, Ohrid.

Today - Icon Gallery, Ohrid.

Condition: The lower half of the icon seriously damage. The lower part of Christ’s body also damaged, as are the nose and both hands of the Mother of God.

Only two fingers remain of her left hand. The board has been shortened by at least 10-15 cm at an unknown date. This is best shown by the recess, which was cut off from the lower part of the frame and in place of it, now of course considerably higher up, a new strip has been nailed on.

Iconography: The Mother of God is shown in full length. She is dressed in purple maphorion and dark green hiton. Under the maphorion, on her head she has a Greek cap decorated with gold and pearls. On her bosom and head, gold stars.

The little Christ turns towards the Mother of God. He is giving a blessing with His right hand and holds a scroll in His left. He is dressed in a vermilion hiton and brown himation striped with gold.

Above the Mother of God, in the two upper corners, two angels are shown in medallions with instruments of torture in their hands. The background is gold.

Conservation: Laboratory of IPCM - Skopje.
