The Crucifixion |
Processional icon. (On reverse - "Jesus Christ the Soul Saviour") 14th century. 94.5 x 70.5 cm. Tempera. Plaster on board. From the Church of the Mother of God Peribleptos (St. Clement’s), Ohrid. Today - at Icon Gallery, Ohrid. Condition: Well preserved. At some places the plaster ground with the paint flaked off. Iconography: In the centre is large cross on which Christ is crucified. Below craggy rock with Adam’s grave in which the cross is planted. On the right side of Christ, the Mother of God with bowed head and raised hands towards her face. On the left St. John, with his hands towards his chest. In the background is shown a requisite architecture. Above the arms of the cross angels in flight, now completely destroyed. |
| Around Christ’s hips a richly folded loincloth. Mother of God wears a green hiton and a dark-red maphorion And Apostle John a blue hiton and grey-ocher himation. The background of the icon is gold. Conservation: Conservation made at the laboratory of IPCM - Skopje.
