The Birth of Christ |
(One half. The other half is in the National Museum in Belgrade.) Michael and Eutychios icon-painters. 1295 - 1317 46 x 17 cm. Tempera. Plaster ground on board. From the Church of the Mother of God Peribleptos (St Clement’s), Ohrid. Today - at the Icon Gallery, Ohrid. Condition: At a unknown date the icon was broken vertically in two parts. The right part is relatively well preserved. |
| Iconography: At the middle of the composition on a red pallet lies theMother of God. Above the manger an ox and donkey are portrayed. On the right of the manger, three wise man approach with gift in their hands. From a segment of the sky a light falls on the manger. In the wider part of the light – a red star. Above the rocks, stand two angels, led by the star, looking towards the light, while a third angle announces the news to a shepherd. Below in the foreground, Joseph is talking to a shepherd who wears an interesting hat with a wide brim. On the right, a large tub in which a girl prepares the bathing water. Conservation: Because of the separation of the two part of this significant icon, full conservation and restoration has not been made.
