The Annunciation

i08mala.JPG (17203 bytes)

(Thurible, gilded copper)

Gilded copper plates.

Engraving method, repousse work and enamel inlay.

26.3 x 19.8 cm.

Circular medallion with composition 13,7 cm.

From the Church St. George, Vlach Quarter, Ohrid.

Today - at the Ohrid Museum.

Condition: Only the central section of the thurible is found. The other two parts, the handle and incense container, are also lost.

Central section is well preserved. Because of later misuse (as a lignite-shovel) at some places the gold plate has worn off. Enamel is also well preserved, with the exception of two or three places where it has been broken and chipped off.

Iconography: The iconographic motif "The Annunciation", where in the middle of the composition, between the Mother of God and the Archangel Gabriel, a stylized palmette exists, and that is a rarely depicted motif in icons. However, examples can be found in the wider field of Byzantine art beginning from the 6th century. The motif is hortus conclusus - the enclosed garden which is one of the symbols of the Mother of God in Song of Songs – 4:12 - “You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride; you are a spring enclosed, sealed fountain. This iconographic motif is more frequently found in Western than in Eastern iconography.

Origin: The thurible without doubt was the product of one of the most prominent workshops for such objects, such as those in Alexandria (Egypt) and Cyprus.
