The Mother of God Hodegetria

i07mala.JPG (20871 bytes)

(On the reverse, "The Crucifixion")

13th century.

Processional icon.

Tempera. Plaster ground on canvas. Base – wooden board. Revetment of gilded silver.

Conditions: In the lower part, the frame is broken in several places. Starting from the halo of the infant Christ, over his left shoulder, and up to the upper part of the palm of the Mother of God, the ground together with the layer of paint has flaked off.

Layer of paint depicting the hair of the infant Christ’s head flaked off, also at several places on the right arm of the Mother of God. At an unknown date, probably because of inexpert cleaning of the face of the Mother of God, damage to the upper layer of paint by modeling the face. In recent years a part of the silver revetment has disappeared, especially the plastic with the composition of the "Mother of God Episcepsis".

Iconography: The Mother of God, holds the infant Christ in her left arm and points to him with her right hand; Christ holds a scroll in his left hand and gives a blessing with his right. This belongs to the type of the Mother of God Hodegetria – she is showing the way. The paintings of the faces in the icon are among the best of the period to which it belongs.

Conservation: Carried out in the laboratory of IPCM – Skopje.
