Communion of the Apostoles |
12th – 13th century 33.5 x 34 cm Tempera. Plaster ground on canvas. Base – board. From the Church of the Mother of God Peribleptos (St. Clement’s), Ohrid. Today - at the Icon Gallery, Ohrid. Condition: The wooden base is eaten of worms. The four corners more or less damaged because of the dilapidation of the board. In many places, especially the lower part of the icon, the plaster ground and layer of paint have flaked off. Because of the flaking of the layer of paint, the faces and garments of the Apostles of Christ are considerably damaged. The inscription is also damaged. |
| Iconography: A subject very rarely treated in icon painting. It can be stated with considerable certainty that this is the only icon with this theme known to date among Macedonian icons surviving from the period from the 11th-19th centuries. Specific is that Christ is portrayed under his baldachin two times, but the Apostles are portrayed in groups. The yeast bread for communion is portrayed on the table. Conservation: Cleaned and conserved at IPCM, Skopje.
