The Folk Costumes of the plain and agrarian population The costumes of this population especially the summer components reflect reminiscences of the ancient Slavonic tradition. The clothing items, mainly made of a homemade fabric (linen, thread, cotton), are a knee-length shirt with a woolen sash around the waist and skutovi freely falling along the pants with the trouser legs tucked inside the motley woolen socks. On the feet they wear opintsi. The main component of the female costume is the long tunic-like shirt with opulent embroidery in geometrical motifs on the breast, sleeves and along the sides (skutovi) made in woolen threads on a linen, thread or cotton base. A component of the costume is the clothing item zubun (klashenik, kyurdia, zoban, shegun, shayak). For the summer sleeveless or short sleeved saya, sagia, sayche of various lengths ornamented with embroidery, glitter décor, braids, fringes, and pellets of wool. A long black knitted or patterned sash as well as an ornamented apron are also basic elements of the female costume. The head covers sokai and ubrusi are opulently embroidered and ornamented with various decorations at the ends korpi, darpni, bandanas as well as long thread cloths. Besides their main function to cover and protect the head they have other interpretations they denote territorial integrity, age, marital status and have a mystic ritual function. |
