The Folk Costumes of Prespa

The villages along the bank of the Prespa Lake have two different costumes each of which carries different stylistic and esthetic characteristics. The costume of Gorna Prespa (Upper Prespa) resembles the national clothing of the town Resen with only minor differences and the costume of Dolna Prespa (Lower Prespa).

The female costume of Gorna Prespa (Upper Prespa) consists of a shirt made of a thin fabric ornamented with stylized vegetal motif on the sleeves embroidered in woolen and silk variegated threads, covered by a jube of a striped/patterned fabric and a shegun made of a white klashna with short sleeves ornamented with woolen decorations and braids. The apron skutina presemnik is placed around the waist with a long black woolen sash. A characteristic feature of the bridal act is the upper clothing item jube made of a black thick fabric choya ornamented with glitter décor.

Dolna Prespa (Lower Prespa) is located on the most southern border point and there are only a few villages on the Macedonian side. The rest are on the other side of the border. The national costume of this region is very simple. Several preserved exemplars from the late 19th century were totally different to those of Gorna Prespa (Upper Prespa). The shirts have opulent embroidery on the sleeves, the clothing items – sheguni, resachki, ornamented aprons skutini chultar with decorative fringes made of choya as well as the patterned knitted socks all in a light red color make up the costume of this region. But instead of this light and picturesque costume under the influence of the komiti in the period before the Ilinden Rising and especially after the rising in 1903 black clothing items are worn as a sign of mourning for the unsuccessful attempt for liberation. Those costumes where the clothing items are prepared and ornamented in black fabric rapidly expand to the neighboring regions – the Prilep Plain, the Bitola Plain, Upper villages of Bitola, the Lerin Plain.

Narodnite nosii vo Prespa
