Macedonia - from a Federal to an Independent State

(1945 - 1991)

After the I Session of ASNOM, Macedonia continued her development as a federal state within the frames of the Yugoslav Federation. During the period August 1944 - April 1945 the Presidium of ASNOM united both the supreme legislative and executive authority and worked on the normalization of the social life. In March 1945 the first elections were organized in which were elected the governmental agencies. On April 16, 1945, the first government was established. The basic procupation of the executive authority was the political, economic, educational and cultural renewal of the People’s Republic (NR) i.e. Socialist Republic (SR) of Macedonia. This process was manly conducted by the Communist Party of Macedonia (KPM), later the Communist League of Macedonia (SKM), with mass organizations on its side (the People’s Front i.e. the Socialist Alliance of the Working People of Macedonia (SSRNM), Syndicate and Youth organizations, Anti-fascist Women’s Front (AFZ).

With the first constitution from 1946, NR Macedonia has been constituted into a sovereign people’s republic within the frames of the Yugoslav federation. Macedonia has been functioning with all attributes as a state: the soverein authority, territorial integrity, national flag and coat of arms, the official language, the NR Macedonia citizenship and so on. The governmental agencies such as: People’s Assembly, government, republic and local administration, courts etc. have been constituted and are in function. In accordance with the Constitutions of NR i.e. SR Macedonia from 1953, 1963 and 1974, the governmental and legislative constitution of Macedonia and her rights on sovereignity and independnce have been strenghtened. With the constitutive acts the basic rights and the freedom of the citizen have been guaranteed, especially the rights of the national minorities having been realized in their free cultural development and the usage of the native language.

The period 1945 - 1953 was characterized with centralized administrative system of government of the state and the economy. During the period 1950 - 1989 the socialist self-government and nationalization were introduced in all spheres of the social life in Macedonia.

In the period 1944 - 1948 the expropriation of the means of production was executed, resulting into domination of the state (social) property. Taking into consideration the carrying out of the reforms on the field of economy from 1965, 1981 and 1989, the orientation has been taken concerning the foundation of the market relations.

After the World War II Macedonia was actually an undeveloped country. The available economic resouces, the personnel potentials, the enthusiasm of the masses have initiated the fast industrialization and economic development including Macedonia into the middle-developed countries.

Macedonia has been taking concern about the status of the Macedonians in the neighbouring countries, within the frames of the Yugoslav foreign policy. After the World War II, Macedonia has collaborated with the socialist countries, while after the adoption of the Resolution of the Information Bureau (1948), she has equally collaborated with the Eastern and the Western countries and participated into the Movement of the Non-aligned Countries.

The Macedonian economic and political crises (1981 - 1990) has resulted into the strengthening of the republic’s sovereign rights and desintegration of SFRJ as a final result. In 1990/91 , the Republic of Macedonia has determined to achieve her entire sovereignty and indepence choosing the way of peaceful policy.
